“I, like you all, am incensed by Brown’s decision to cut Men’s track. What made me particularly angry was that Brown released a statement [after George Floyd’s death] about supporting Black students and fighting injustice. But the school is taking away track, one of the most diverse sports on campus but they are keeping Lacrosse, Ice Hockey, Baseball and Crew? There are more black kids on their track roster than all those other sports combined. Some of those teams do not have a single Black student on their rosters. I checked. Track has eleven. And to add insult to injury they are elevating sailing to varsity?! No, especially right now we need to call people and inst**utions out for their BS. …” “By cutting Track and Field, Brown is literally taking away admissions opportunities for Black male athletes while preserving admission opportunities for white athletes in affluent sports….Brown should be finding more opportunities for Black Men to go to Brown, not fewer. …” “Don’t say you’re in support of Black Lives and addressing the inst**utional inequities that affect Black Americans while at the same time helping to enshrine income and cla*** disparities by giving more opportunities for those in affluent sports and increasing your number of White male varsity athletes and decreasing the number of Black male varsity athletes on your campus.” “Talk is cheap. Brown, do the work. Fix this now. Reinstate Men’s Track!“ |
